Father figures and fashion tips. Lost loves and jollof rice. African empires and illicit sex. Good days and bad days. Six young Black men meet for group therapy, and let their hearts – and imaginations – run wild.

Inspired by Ntozake Shange's ‘For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf’, For Black Boys... is located on the threshold of joyful fantasy and brutal reality: a world of music, movement, storytelling and verse – where six men clash and connect in a desperate bid for survival.

Relevant, Thought-provoking, Intense

See it if you want an astutely directed and challenging evening of theatre, that balances out its points with humour.

Don’t see it if you’re easily triggered: this had a longer trigger warning list than any play I recall seeing in the past but an important watch nonetheless

See it if You want a character piece exploring what it means to be a black man that is beautifully acted with a simple but effective set

Don’t see it if You want a plot driven show with a big budget, and take care with the trigger warnings

See it if If you seek a powerful and thought-provoking theatrical production that tackles the Black experience in Britain head-on.

Don’t see it if If you're in search of a high-budget production, this might not be the show for you as the set design is minimalistic.

Important information

Contains violence, gang violence and toxic relationships, plus forms of trauma including sexual abuse, child abuse, domestic violence and terminal illness. Themes of suicide and suicidal ideation throughout.
